Santa María del Naranco in Oviedo
Santa María del Naranco in Oviedo is one of the great masterpieces of Asturian Pre-Romanesque architecture. Built between 842 and 850 during the reign of Ramiro I of Asturias, this former royal residence stands on the slopes of Monte Naranco and is part of Oviedo’s UNESCO World Heritage ensemble.

A 9th-century palace
Santa María del Naranco was built during the reign of Ramiro I (842–850), on the slopes of Monte Naranco, as part of a royal complex that also included the nearby church of San Miguel de Lillo.
Its original function has not been conclusively established. It has traditionally been regarded as a palace or leisure residence associated with the monarch, although interpretations such as a royal hall or royal pavilion have also been proposed. The building was later converted into a church.
Exceptional architecture
The building has a rectangular plan and is arranged on two levels. The lower floor, traditionally known as the crypt, is entirely vaulted. The upper floor is reached by an external staircase and contains a large central hall ending at both sides in open loggias overlooking the landscape.
The loggias, with their characteristic triple arcades supported by columns, are among the monument’s most recognisable features. The exterior is also notable for its fluted buttresses, while inside the transverse arches reinforce the vault and articulate the space.
Decoration and details
Architecture and decoration form an inseparable whole. Columns with carved shafts, Corinthian-inspired capitals, pilasters and medallions depicting human and animal figures give the building a richness that was unusual for its time.
The symmetrical layout and the opening of the loggias towards the surroundings also strengthen the building’s relationship with the Naranco landscape and the city below.
Santa María del Naranco, a World Heritage Site
Santa María del Naranco forms part of the group of Asturian Pre-Romanesque monuments recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The initial 1985 inscription included Santa María del Naranco, San Miguel de Lillo and Santa Cristina de Lena, and was later extended to other monuments of Asturian art.
